Where should I start?
Begin with Columbus Day and follow the numbered main novels through Ground State, book 19. Use the companion route for Trouble on Paradise, Mavericks and the Homefront audio drama.
Go to the reading list ↓Expeditionary Force starts from an awkward military-space-opera question: what does a human soldier do when the civilizations overhead have already won the technology race? Its answer has room for improvisation, friendship and a great deal of argument with an intelligence whose confidence is rarely in short supply.
The number of titles can look daunting, especially when one is also the name of a spin-off. The useful distinction is between the main numbered sequence and the companion stories around it. You can begin with three books and decide whether the voice works for you before planning a long campaign.

The main mission and the detours
The author’s suggested early reading order supplies the companion placements. Newer main installments continue the numbered route; an announced release is kept separate from books already available.

MAIN SEQUENCEJoe, Skippy and the continuing campaign
The main route follows books one through nineteen. Failure Mode was once positioned as an ending, but later volumes continue the story. Treat it as a point in the published sequence, not proof that every later title is a prequel or unrelated spin-off.
MAVERICKS BRANCHDeathtrap and Freefall
The Mavericks spin-off shares the setting. The author places Deathtrap after Renegades and Freefall after Valkyrie. Breakaway returns these threads to the main numbered series. Do not buy the main novel Mavericks expecting it to be the first volume of the separate branch.
SHORTER & AUDIOTrouble on Paradise and Homefront
The author places Trouble on Paradise after Paradise and Homefront after Deathtrap, before Armageddon. Homefront is a dramatized audio production, so its presentation differs from a single-narrator audiobook. These are additional stories, not replacement editions of their neighbouring novels.

Follow the titles, not the size of the shelf
A long humorous series lives or dies by whether you enjoy spending time with its recurring company. Start with the core dynamic rather than buying every available format in advance. If it clicks, the checklist can become a practical record of where you stopped; it does not need to be a deadline.
Release dates need a little care in an audio-led series. A new recording, reissue or preorder can appear beside an older title without changing its story position. This guide counts Ground State as released and keeps Last Ride outside the active list until publication. The author’s other series, including Convergence, are separate projects.
Explore Expeditionary Force ↗A few reader questions
Is Mavericks book six or a separate series?
Both labels exist. Mavericks is main book six; Expeditionary Force: Mavericks is a companion branch beginning with Deathtrap. Compare the full title.
Do I need Homefront in print?
The item included here is an audio drama. The main route works as a practical novels-only sequence; the companion route marks where the audio story fits.
Why is Last Ride missing from the checklist?
The checked Audible listing schedules book twenty for December 2026, after this guide’s October review date. Announced availability is not the same as release.
