The Culture reading order at a glance
- Our first pick
- The Player of Games offers a focused way to meet the Culture and its relationship with another society.
- What the ten include
- Nine novels and The State of the Art, a collection that includes Culture-related and other stories. Ten items does not mean ten novels.
- Alternative start
- Consider Phlebas is the first published Culture novel. Choose it if you prefer to discover the sequence in written order.
Where should I start?
Our suggested entry is The Player of Games. If you enjoy it, return to Consider Phlebas and continue broadly in publication order. A publication-order route is available too.
Go to the reading list ↓A society with extraordinary material abundance does not automatically produce simple stories. The Culture’s technology and artificial minds expand what its people can do, then leave uncomfortable questions about what they should do when they encounter civilizations with different freedoms, limits and ambitions.
Banks explores that setting through different people and situations. You do not need to follow one protagonist from book to book, and a later publication is not necessarily a direct sequel to the previous title. Our route starts with a comparatively focused invitation, then gives the wider bookshelf a convenient order without presenting it as a rule.

A shared civilization, not a single continuous plot
Connections vary from obvious to deliberately oblique. These panels help you choose an entrance while preserving the surprises inside each individual novel.

ENTRY / OUR RECOMMENDATIONThe Player of Games
A focused central character and a structured encounter make this our first-read choice. That is ReadGalaxy’s recommendation, not an official requirement. You can move from it to the other novels without needing a chronology of the Culture’s entire history.
FIRST PUBLISHEDConsider Phlebas
The first published novel offers another angle on the Culture. It is a valid starting point, especially for readers who prefer to follow an author’s development. Our alternative route follows the novels in publication order, with the collection placed after Use of Weapons as a convenient detour.
NOVELS & SHORT FICTIONKeep the formats distinct
The State of the Art is a story collection, not a single novel-length sequel to Use of Weapons. Some other novels make their setting connections less explicit. Avoid searching for a definitive explanation of every link before reading: uncertainty can be part of the experience.

Ask what abundance leaves unresolved
One useful way into the Culture is to treat its confidence as a question rather than an answer. A civilization may have the means to intervene, but that does not settle who should consent or what an improvement looks like from outside. Keep that tension beside the pleasure of the ships, habitats and enormous minds.
Do not assume that every science-fiction novel published under Iain M. Banks belongs to this setting. The Algebraist and Against a Dark Background, for example, are different projects. A bibliography organized by author can put them next to the Culture without making them extra volumes. Choose the next premise that interests you once you have an entry point.
