Imperial Radch reading order at a glance
- Core trilogy
- Ancillary Justice → Ancillary Sword → Ancillary Mercy.
- Wider universe
- Provenance, Translation State and Radiant Star offer other central stories in the same broad setting.
- Current addition
- Radiant Star was published in May 2026. It is a standalone in the universe, not a fourth Ancillary novel.
Where should I start?
Read Ancillary Justice, Ancillary Sword and Ancillary Mercy first. Then choose Provenance, Translation State or Radiant Star as a separate route through the shared setting.
Go to the reading list ↓Breq’s starting situation turns the ordinary word person into a complicated question. A consciousness once distributed across a warship and its human bodies now has a much narrower physical position. Ann Leckie uses that perspective to make familiar assumptions about identity, empire and obedience feel newly uncertain.
The Ancillary novels form a clear three-book arc. Beyond them, the setting supports other stories with other central people and problems. Reading the trilogy first gives you a strong grounding, but it is important not to market every related novel as the next installment of Breq’s particular plot.

A central trilogy, then independent windows
The route selector keeps the Ancillary narrative together and offers the wider novels as an optional extension. Their shared setting does not make them three more Ancillary volumes.

CORE / BREQThe Ancillary trilogy
Read Ancillary Justice, Ancillary Sword and Ancillary Mercy in order. Their connected narrative makes this the place where sequence matters most. Keep the deliberately unfamiliar point of view intact rather than looking for a glossary that resolves every uncertainty ahead of the story.
WIDER UNIVERSEProvenance and Translation State
These novels follow other central stories within the wider setting. Our optional route places them after the trilogy, in publication order. They expand the conversation about identity and institutions without requiring you to imagine them as Ancillary books four and five.
NEWER STANDALONERadiant Star
Published in May 2026, Radiant Star offers another independent story in the Imperial Radch universe. The publisher explicitly presents it as a standalone. Our wider route saves it for last so you can enjoy it with the other perspectives already in mind.

Notice what the language takes for granted
A useful response to an unfamiliar narrative perspective is to keep reading long enough to see how its habits work. Notice what the voice distinguishes immediately and what it leaves unclear. That pattern can tell you as much about a civilization as a direct explanation of its rules.
The small social details matter beside the enormous technological ones. A ritual, a cup of tea or a decision about who receives attention can reveal the operation of power at a scale a warship cannot resolve. If you enjoy that texture, the wider novels are an opportunity to see the setting from another position rather than merely an obligation to extend a checklist.
Explore Imperial Radch ↗A few reader questions
Is Radiant Star Ancillary book four?
No. The publisher calls it a standalone in the Imperial Radch universe. The Ancillary trilogy remains Justice, Sword and Mercy.
Should I start with Provenance instead?
It has a separate central story. Our default recommendation is Ancillary Justice because it introduces the core trilogy and offers a strong foundation for the wider setting.
Is The Raven Tower on this route?
No. It is a separate fantasy novel by Leckie, not another Imperial Radch installment.
